It was only a matter of time that we pay homage to Ms. Janelle Monáe. Entering the music industry breaking all boundaries showing everyone who's boss! Literally. Going from an independent artist to signing with Bad Boy records in 2006 (Props to Big Boi) being granted all creative control. Puff respected her individuality and wanted to expose this multi-talented Queen. In 2015, she launched her own label, Wondaland. You may still have Janelle engraved in your head strutting in a tux, hair up to Jesus, and breaking down every stage she hit with her killer moves but she's gracefully breaking that mold. Growing up, cinema has always inspired her style of music and now she's taking over the big screen. Her film debut in the ground breaking, Moonlight, left us speechless. The film dives deep, focusing on the struggles of growing up a black man in the middle of Miami's "War on Drugs" era and coming to terms with his own sexuality. And of course, you may remember seeing Ms. Monáe's gorgeous face in last weeks trailer post of the highly anticipated "Hidden Figures", with cast mates Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer. Janelle Monáe is not only giving us soul, funk, and R&B but a message throughout all her platforms. From the topics she touches in her music emphasizing the power we all have to touch people in our communities to the meaningful roles she plays on screen. She's taken the responsibility to create with purpose. Empowering us all to love one another and and to challenge the issues we face in our society. Never conform to what is considered norm and be your very self to every extent.
In the words of Janelle, BE Q-U-E-E-N!
